It is with great sadness that we learn of Gloria Petyarre's passing on 8th June 2021. Gloria was one of Australia's most successful female artists and she will be a great loss to the art world. Gloria participated in the first art projects in Utopia, north east of Alice Springs in 1977 and her works have been highly sought after by collectors around the world. We will miss her generosity of spirit, her warmth, her teachings. I spent many hours with Gloria, whenever I travelled to the Northern Territory , enjoying her stories and her humour. Gloria will forever hold a special place in my heart. Travel safely home to your country Gloria.

About Us

Cicada Trading acknowledges Australia’s First Nations People, the Quandamooka First Nations people, Nunukul (Noonuccal, Nunukal), Ngugi (Nughi) and Gorenpul as the Traditional Custodians of the land and waters on which we work and reside. We recognise their connection to land, water and community. We pay our respects to all Elders past, present and and emerging, and for they hold the memories, traditions and hopes of our First Nations People.

Cicada Trading Pty Ltd actively supports, promotes and showcases contemporary Australian Indigenous Art. Cicada has a collection of high quality Australian Contemporary Indigenous artwork from a number of regions across Australia. The artwork it exhibits includes original acrylic canvasses, limited edition prints and wooden sculptures. Cicada sources art for collectors within and outside Australia and has a reputation for its high quality artwork and its passion for Australian Indigenous art and culture and its people.

Cicada can also assist in sourcing and selecting corporate art for offices, hotels, restaurants, hospitals or for corporate gifts. Cicada works with organisations to ensure the artwork selected or commissioned creates the right ambiance for the enjoyment of their customers, staff, visitors or patients. Cicada's artwork is also sought after as exclusive corporate gifts by corporations for their select customers.

Cicada works in partnership with a number of indigenous communities' art centres such as Haasts Bluff, Iwantja, Yuendumu, Papunya Tula Artists, Papunya Tjupi, Tjala Arts, Balgo, Warmun, Maruku, Martu Milli, Mornington Island, Maningrida and directly with the artists only where they have no direct association with an arts centre. Cicada's aim is to encourage individuality and self determination and help the artists achieve international recognition. Cicada feels fortunate to be able to spend time with a number of communities on a regular basis and to have built strong relationships and friendships with them. Cicada's collection of artworks is fully authenticated and documented with appropriate translations of the storylines for a better understanding and enjoyment of each art piece. While many of these talented artists have national and international recognition, Cicada always encourages the younger and up-and-coming artists to make their own unique and expressive statements and is proud to present them to the world here.

Cicada has held a number of exhibitions since 2004 in Europe, the Middle East and North America, in particular Milan, Canterbury, Paris, Istanbul, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, Denver, New York and Houston. Cicada also works in collaboration with select galleries in those regions. Whenever possible, Cicada incorporates a short audio visual presentation on Aboriginal culture and art to provide the viewer with a better understanding of and connection with the artwork and help build cross-cultural understanding.

Buyers include private collectors, galleries and corporate customers.

Cicada's Director, Anne Speed, swapped a long career in IT and marketing for a new life which combines her passion for travel, discovery, people and art. Through regular lengthy visits and time spent with the artists in their communities since 2003, she has forged strong friendships with them, especially with the women of Utopia and their families, in the Central Desert Region of Australia. She feels very honoured to be able to present Australian Indigenous Art to the world, and excited to promote the young, new artists whose art is bold and dramatic, visually contemporary yet always incorporating ancient traditional inherited dreamtime stories.

Cicada is proud to present this beautiful art which is now available for all to appreciate and enjoy. Although this art is very complex and is embedded with ancient knowledge, it can be enjoyed purely on its own visual merits and appeal. We hope you enjoy this wonderful art as much as we have pleasure in sourcing it!
